312 Area Code History

312 is one of the original 86 area codes created by the Bell System in 1947. It originally served the greater Chicago area. 312 was split in 1996 creating the need to update some of the phone numbers to area code 773. In 2009, area code 872 was created and is currently an overlay to 312 and 773. An “overlay” is when more than one area code serves the same geographic area.
